In addition, we perform more open heart procedures than anyone else in the region. Some of our areas of expertise include:

  • Coronary artery bypass grafts, commonly called “bypass surgery”
  • Mitral and aortic valve repair and replacement

Advanced Technology and Treatments

Ventricular Assist Device

Our heart failure team, which includes cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists with advanced training in heart failure, is experienced in evaluating, implanting and treating patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVAD). An LVAD, sometimes referred to as a “bridge to transplant,” is a mechanical pump that is implanted to support heart function and blood flow for heart failure patients waiting for a heart transplant. It is also used as therapy to prolong and improve the quality of life for patients who are not eligible for a heart transplant, but have weakened and failing hearts. The device helps the heart pump blood from the left ventricle — the lower left chamber of the heart — to the rest of the body and vital organs.

Transcatheter Valve Repair and Replacement

For patients who need aortic valve replacement or mitral valve repair, we have a team of cardiothoracic surgeons and interventional cardiologists who specialize in minimally invasive treatments of structural heart conditions using small catheters, advanced imaging and tiny incisions. These procedures — transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) — lead to a quicker recovery, shorter hospital stays, better survival and improved quality of life. Among the first in the nation to perform these procedures, our physicians have extensive experience resulting in excellent outcomes.
