Surgical Critical Care Fellowship - Grant Medical Center

OhioHealth Grant Medical Center Surgical Critical Care Fellowship is a new, one-year ACGME accredited training opportunity for physicians interested in the the management of critically ill trauma and surgical patients. You’ll practice in Grant Medical Centers 49-critical care licensed bed teaching hospital, ranked the busiest adult Level 1 Trauma Center in Ohio by the American College of Surgeons. Grant also serves as a tertiary center for patients in more than 50 counties in Ohio and neighboring states. We accept two fellows each year into this high-acuity program.

Robust Clinical Experience in a High-Volume Hospital
We offer advanced proficiency necessary to administer or supervise surgical critical care units.
Our program is designed to build on the foundational skills established in the general surgery residency. Clinically, the program is structured to ensure fellows assume progressive responsibility in care of critically ill and injured surgical patients, get exposure to a wide range of surgical conditions and develop expertise in surgical skills.
Our fellows will have rich exposure to a broad range of critically injured and critically ill patients under the supervision of ten board-certified surgical intensivists in a variety of clinical settings, including urban and rural community settings, as well as a Level 1 trauma center with over 6,000 trauma visits a year. In addition, the fellows will gain experience in the administration of a surgical critical care unit and be responsible for educating medical students, residents, other team members and patients and their families.

The program structure balances mentored and fellow-directed practice. From placement of aterial lines and chest tubes to airway and ventilator management, faculty and mentors support you as you gain proficiency in surgical critical care.
- Program Objectives

- Demonstrate the ability to administer and lead a critical care unit and appoint, train and supervise specialized personnel upon completion of the fellowship.
- Evaluate new patients with traumatic injury, pre-operative assessment of surgical trauma patients.
- Follow-up of post-op trauma patients and the performance of minor outpatient procedures that are frequently done in the clinic area.
- Teach skills to effectively manage critically-ill surgical patients by working with established trauma experts.
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of pre-hospital care, triage, transportation, resuscitation, surgery and non-surgical management, critical care and rehabilitation.
- Perform in a leadership role in teaching critical care skills and conducting research through service direction, delegation of assignments, leading teaching conferences, and research project development and oversight.

In addition to Grant Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center, and other OhioHealth inpatient and outpatient facilities, fellows will have the opportunity to go to Riverside Methodist Hospital and Mansfield Hospital for their rotations.

- Scholarly Activities and Quality Improvement

We have full-time, dedicated faculty members who are available to provide support and guidance for fellows on their research and quality improvement projects. Fellows will have the opportunities to participate in the below scholarly activities:
- Weekly lectures, morbidity and mortality conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, surgical grand rounds and journal clubs.
- Participation in a QI project of their own design or one designed by the program or linked to the medical center's goals.
- IRB approved research projects leading to presentation and/or publication.
- Oral or poster presentations at the OhioHealth Research Day or scientific meeting.
- Manuscript preparation of evidence based medicine systematic review of a topic.
- Access to shared databases through the staffed library.
- Participation in quarterly Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and intramural and extramural paramedic and nursing courses.
- Opportunities to participate in Trauma in the Hill and Stop the Bleed training.
