Hip Services at OhioHealth

The orthopedic experts at OhioHealth offer comprehensive care for patients with hip pain.

Some hip pain can be treated non-surgically. After diagnosing your hip pain, our comprehensive team of hip experts can offer non-surgical treatment options such as physical therapy and injections, including an advanced treatment where fluoroscopic-guided technology is used to assist injection therapy.

If non-surgical methods are exhausted, surgery may be needed to treat your hip condition. We have an expert team who can help.

Surgical hip procedures we offer include:

MINIMALLY INVASIVE HIP SURGERY
In minimally invasive hip surgery, your surgeon uses smaller incisions and cuts fewer muscles around the hip area than in a traditional total hip replacement. The procedure requires specially designed surgical instruments to perform. In the hands of our expert surgeons, this procedure can reduce blood loss, spare your muscle and ultimately, help you recover more quickly.

HIP RESURFACING

The hip joint is made up of a ball and socket. The socket is made of bone and cartilage, and the ball is the top of the thighbone, also known as the femoral head.

During hip replacement surgery (also called hip arthroplasty), an orthopedic surgeon replaces the damaged ball and socket with new and durable artificial synthetic parts that mimic the natural joint.

In minimally invasive hip surgery, your surgeon uses smaller incisions and cuts fewer muscles around the hip area than in a traditional total hip replacement. OhioHealth has expert orthopedic surgeons trained in the use of minimally invasive techniques that can lead to quicker recovery times and less pain.

TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT
During hip replacement surgery (also called hip arthroplasty), a surgeon removes your natural hip joint and replaces it with an artificial joint, called an implant. Both the head of the thigh bone and the damaged socket are removed and replaced. The surgery can be performed from the back of the hip (posterior approach) or from the front of the thigh (anterior approach).

Your surgeon will talk to you about the procedure that is right for you.

Pre-Surgery Education

Research shows that patients who received education about their procedure and recovery before having a hip replacement have better outcomes than those who don’t. Our Joint Class is available to you and your caregiver at no cost. We want you to have the best experience and recovery possible. Ask your physician about signing up for a joint class.

Hip Fracture Care

OhioHealth provides enhanced care for patients with hip fractures. Treatment for hip fractures usually includes surgery. Our goal is to repair your fractured hip within 24 hours of arriving at one of our hospitals. We’ll then coordinate care with your therapists to get you up and moving as soon as possible because this helps you recover faster.

Your fracture management team will include a medical doctor, an orthopedic surgeon, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and patient navigators.
