Non-Surgical Treatments

Your doctor will work with you to manage your shoulder pain with less invasive treatment options first. These include anti-inflammatory medications, rest, and hot or cold packs with elevation. We also offer advanced non-surgical treatment options such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, ultrasound-guided and flouroscopically-guided injections, and customized physical therapy plans.

Surgical Treatments We Offer

If non-surgical methods are unsuccessful, your doctor may recommend surgery to treat your shoulder condition.

Procedures we offer include:

ROTATOR CUFF REPAIR AND OTHER SPORTS-RELATED PROCEDURES
Whether you’re a professional athlete or an active adult with chronic shoulder pain, certain injuries to the soft tissue in the shoulder can keep you from performing daily activities. During conventional shoulder replacement, the implant mimics the normal anatomy of the shoulder: a plastic "cup" is fitted into the shoulder socket and a metal "ball" is attached to the top of the upper arm bone. In reverse total shoulder replacement, the socket and metal ball are switched: the metal ball is fixed to the socket and the plastic cup is fixed to the upper end of the humerus. During shoulder replacement surgery, also called shoulder arthroplasty, your surgeon removes the damaged parts of your shoulder and replaces them with an artificial prosthetic joint that mimics the natural joint. The good news is that in most cases, these procedures can be done arthroscopically (through a scope inserted in a small incision). After surgery, most patients are able to regain motion, strength and stability and return to the active lifestyles they love.
SHOULDER RESURFACING
This is an innovative treatment for younger patients (55 or younger) diagnosed with advanced osteoarthritis. Your surgeon can replace worn cartilage in the shoulder with transplanted donor cartilage and bone. The procedure is performed arthroscopically — through a scope inserted in a small incision — through the rotator cuff muscles. So it allows you to preserve more of your healthy tissue and remove less bone than conventional surgery. Patients often go home the same day. Your doctor will let you know if this treatment is right for you.
TOTAL SHOULDER REPLACEMENT
In shoulder replacement surgery, also called shoulder arthroplasty, your surgeon removes the damaged parts of your shoulder and replaces them with artificial parts called implants. We can replace just the head of the upper arm bone (ball) or both the ball and socket.
REVERSE SHOULDER REPLACEMENT
In reverse shoulder replacement surgery, the placement of the implants are reversed. This procedure is used primarily when patients have large rotator cuff tears because the replacement relies on the deltoid muscles instead of the rotator cuff to provide arm motion and strength. Your physician will talk to you about this procedure if diagnosis indicates it’s right for you.

Pre-Surgery Education

Research shows that patients who received education about their procedure and recovery before having a shoulder replacement have better outcomes than those who don’t. Our Joint Class is available at no cost to you and your caregiver. We want you to have the best experience and recovery possible. Ask your physician about signing up for a joint class.
